November 2019 Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch speakerThis is Argyro Kavvada, NASA earth scientist who was our guest speaker at the November 21 Lunch Bunch at Arlington Community High school. She literally held the young women’s rapt attention as she described her work at taking earth science data from many technological sources ( satellites, in particular) and using that data to determine their effect on events on earth. The incidence of cholera was used as an example of the impact of climate change which causes flooding in some parts of the world, thereby increasing the incidence of cholera in those affected populations. The young women were so interested in her presentation that they forgot to eat and ended up taking their lunches to their next classes. They were very participatory as well, asking Argie detailed questions and contributing some examples of climate change in their home countries. Argie is from Greece and is an immigrant herself. Her presentation, her demeanor, her success simply said to the girls that really, anything is possible!

The next Lunch Bunch will be held on Thursday, January 9. For more information or to sign up, contact Michele Milden.

Fall 2019 Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch participants

Our next Lunch Bunch program will take place on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 12:40 p.m. at the Arlington Community High School, 800 S. Walter Reed Drive, Arlington. We will continue this year’s theme, “Make It Possible,” with guest speaker, Carmen Hackett, a firefighter.

At our first Lunch Bunch on October 17, Tanya Talento, Chair of the Arlington School Board, was the inspirational guest speaker. The girls discussed what they wanted to make possible this year at school, at work, and at life over a delicious lunch provided by our volunteers.

Mark your calendar for the December 12 Lunch Bunch program. There will be no program in January due to testing. We are always looking for members to volunteer at one of our monthly programs. If you are interested, please contact Mary Ann Ullrich or Michele Milden for more information.

April 2019 Lunch Bunch

“April’s Lunch Bunch”. Black belt Tae Kwan Do master, Judy Pendergast, gave a demonstration to the young women on self-defense. She demonstrated ways to disarm an attacker from the front, the side and the rear. Her instructions included how to use body parts – the head, the heel of the hand, the foot, the elbow and the little finger to defend oneself. Her one rule: “Never, ever walk with both earbuds in your ears! You need always to be aware of your surroundings. She instructed them to “run in the opposite direction if one hears a car approaching slowly. The young women were quite willing to participate in each individual instruction as demonstrated by the attached photos.
