Arlington AAUW 2020-21 Programs So Far!
It is certainly a different start to the 2020 year for our Arlington Branch than we could have imagined a year ago!! We have all become zoomers and high techies as we learn new ways to communicate and stay connected.
In September, we had a very timely session with Brian Cannon, Executive Director of FairMaps Va, a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to the passage of Amendment One on Virginia’s November ballot. AAUW Virginia supports the passage of this amendment to address redistricting reform and Brian provided information and answered questions to help those who attended be prepared to vote.
On October 17th, we joined our colleagues from around the Northern District for a joint meeting with a presentation from Challenging Racism, an Arlington-based non-profit working to bring a broader understanding of racism in our communities and what we can do to help address it. Alicia Jones McLeod, herself an AAUW member from Maryland, is the Executive Director and she (along with three trained facilitators) gave us an introduction to the work they do and the kind of approach they take in their workshops to recognize privilege and what we can do once we recognize it!

Nominations Committee
In January, we will be establishing a nominating committee to identify candidates to stand for election at our Annual Meeting on March 20th for our officers whose terms are ending next year. Its work will be done between January 5th, the date of the BoD meeting when membership can be confirmed, and February 28th. when notification of the slate of officers will be sent to the membership, 20 days in advance of the Annual Meeting.
If you would like to be part of shaping the future of the branch by serving on this committee, please let me know. The committee is required to include at least one non-Board member.

The THIS/AAUW will meet on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. We will be discussing what plans members have for Thanksgiving in this difficult time. Will families be able to spend it together? What are our plans for the day? We will also discuss Thanksgiving rituals we have held in the past, and what Thanksgiving means for us. What are origins of this holiday? Looking for Volunteer Tutors
Laura Jackson is the Volunteer Coordinator for one of Arlington’s terrific housing friends Arlington Housing Corporation. They have a much praised tutoring program for students in their apartments and housing. This fall they are running a teen program virtually and are still looking for a few volunteers.
They need two volunteers for Mondays from 4:30-5:30 pm. One to help a teen who is studying Spanish and the other to help a student with reading comprehension. Another student needs a female volunteer on Wednesdays from 5-6 pm, to assist her with homework.
Volunteers will join a Zoom call with staff and all students at the set time and then work virtually in Zoom breakout rooms for about 50 minutes. Zoom training can be provided.
